An Interview with Angela Hunt

Glen Eyrie: Hi Angela! Thanks for representing the teaching team for this year's writers' conference. Could you share a little bit about what this year's conference will focus on?

Angela Hunt: We are delighted to be back! There's no place in the world like Glen Eyrie, and no conference like this one. We bring in four teachers who love to teach and let them bond with their students during the entire time. There's no popping in and out of class, no having to dress up for editors, no worrying about appointments with agents. Just learning and writing, laughing and praying . . . it's one of our favorite conferences of the year.

GE: What specifically sets this conference apart from other writers' conferences?

AH: Our big distinctive is that ours is a WRITING WORKSHOP, where people sign on with an instructor and spend the time actually learning and writing and polishing. All of our instructors listen to what their students want to know, and then we do our best to answer those questions and work on those areas. All of our four teachers have written in several areas--fiction, nonfiction, juvenile, screenplays--so we've gathered years of experience we're eager to share with you.

On the first evening, we teachers will explain our areas of expertise and our teaching methods, then we invite people along for the journey. So they'll "team up" with a teacher and spend most of the time with that teacher, except for morning sessions where we give encouraging "keynote-style" addresses, and evenings when we have more fun, interactive activities with the entire group. We've found that this encourages bonding and close fellowship among the group. We've seen some lasting friendships develop from this conference.

Attendees should bring an open mind and heart, and something to write on--computer, Alphasmart, or even pen and paper. If you have a work in progress, bring it with you.

GE: Who do you consider your main audience for this conference?

AH: Adults and older teens who are interested in honing their writing gifts. Beginners or advanced writers are welcome and should find plenty to enhance their skills.

GE: Why are you passionate about this subject?

AH: Each member of our team—Nancy Rue, Kathryn Mackel, Mark Mynheir, and yours truly—are dedicated writers and teachers. We’ve been doing both for more years than we care to count.

GE: What are two things you want attendees to take away from this conference?

AH: A heart open to the Spirit’s leading and a mind capable of completing the task.

GE: Anything special for this year’s conference?

AH: Oh, yes!  This year we are bringing in someone special -- Mark Mynheir, a full-time police homicide detective who happens to write novels. He will be bringing lots of information that mystery-minded folds will want to learn. Plus, he's a really great guy.

GE: Thanks so much, Angela! We look forward to another excellent writers' conference from you, Mark, Nancy and Kathy this summer!

INSTRUCTORS

Christy Award-winner Angela Hunt has written more than 100 works, ranging from picture books to adult novels. Nearly four million copies of her books have sold worldwide. Now that her two children are grown up, she and her husband, a youth pastor, live in Florida with their dogs, one of which holds the distinction of being the second largest canine in America, as judged by Regis and Kelly! Angela has loved books all her life and admits that she learned to flirt from reading Gone with the Wind—in the fifth grade! Inspired by Nancy Drew mysteries as a child, Nancy Rue knew she would someday be a writer by age 10. While teaching high school English after college, she felt God calling her back to her dream of writing. For 14 years, Nancy was a teacher and a writer—often waking up at 4 AM to write before work! Today, she is a full-time writer who still loves to teach at workshops around the country. Her books include the Lilyseries and Christian Heritage series for kids and young adults, as well as the adult novels Pascal’s Wager and Antonia’s Choice. She and her husband, Jim, live in Tennessee. They have one daughter, Marijean. For more information about Nancy, visit her website www.nancyrue.com.

Kathy Mackel has worked for Disney, Showtime, and Fox studios. Her movie Can of Worms was a Disney Channel favorite. She was part of the screenwriting team for Left Behind: the Movie and a credited screenwriter on Hangman's Curse. A published novelist, Kathryn writes supernatural thrillers for WestBow Press, the latest of which is The Hidden. She also writes middle-readers for HarperCollins, the most recent of which is MadCat. Mark Mynheir is a former homicide detective who has also served as an undercover narcotics agent and a S.W.A.T. team member during his twenty-four year law enforcement career. 2011 Writer’s Summit Student Comments

I have been confirmed in why I want to write, and it's a wonderful experience to be encouraged by fellow believers! It was fantastic to be brought back to the real heart of writing; to understand again that God inspires us to tell stories. - Jackie

The conference allowed me to be introduced to wonderful authors who helped me learn how to write a book, but it also allowed me to learn about myself.  I connected with God in ways that have not happened in years. The Glen allows time and creates an atmosphere where God can connect with me without the noise and busyness of the world. I found my voice, I found myself, God found me! - Jennifer, Parker, CO

I have loved my time here! I've finally found people who "get" me, who understand the need to write the stories God has put on my heart - regardless of the marketability. It has been a time of refreshing and renewal with God. I hope I will be able to attend next year. - Andrea

[Glen Eyrie] is a great place for writers to be encouraged, instructed, and nurtured. God has met me here with new challenges, new direction, and the support I need to accomplish what He has aked of me. - Kay, Centennial, CO

The four writers/speakers were wonderfully diverse and the perfect choices for this conference - I learned SO MUCH!  I felt safe at this conference and on the [Glen Eyrie] property. Safe emotionally and spiritually. The one thing that affected me the most was hearing that the Glen Eyrie staff had been praying for me by name - I almost cried. You cannot imagine what that means to me. - Heather

The conference offered not only encouragement and motivation, but also tools and some practice time to learn to use them. I have a renewed view of my dependence on the Lord and my role as a co-laborer with Him. - Jan, Midlothian, TX
